Summer Fuel Efficiency
23 JunAt Westpointe Chrysler, Jeep, Dodge, and Ram, we understand that summer time is the time to drive. Whether you are driving across the state to attend a graduation or taking a family vacation, we want you to get the most out of your car. The summer hasn’t even begun and all over the U.S. people are feeling the crunch of high gas prices. To get the best fuel economy for your car or truck, consider the following tips:
Keep Your Car in Shape
Seems like common sense, but schedule regular maintenance. Performing general maintenance improves gas mileage by an average of 4 percent. Repairing serious mechanical problems can improve fuel economy by up to 40 percent.
Check Your Tire Pressure
Driving on under-inflated tires at high speeds on a warm summer day is a dangerous combination. Check your tires once a month, especially before you head out on a long road trip. You can improve your gas mileage by up to 3.3 percent by keeping your tires properly inflated. Under-inflated tires can lower gas mileage by .3 percent for every 1 psi drop in pressure. Also, by maintaining tire pressure your tires will last longer, saving you money on tire repairs or replacements.
Schedule Regular Oil Changes
Get regular oil changes every 3 months or every 3,000 miles and use the recommended manufacturer’s grade of motor oil. Your gas mileage will improve by 1-2 percent when you use the recommended grade of motor oil. You can also look for motor oil that says “Energy Conserving” on the API performance label.
Drive Sensibly
Everyone knows that it’s dangerous to be an aggressive driver. But did you know it wastes gas as well? In fact, it can lower your gas mileage by 33 percent at highway speeds and by 5 percent when driving around town. Also, most cars reach their optimal fuel economy between 50 and 60 mph. After 60 mph your fuel economy drops drastically, so it’s safe to assume that speeding is not only dangerous, it’s expensive.
So, when you are out on the road this summer remember to keep your car in shape, check your tire pressure, schedule regular oil changes, and drive safely. Enjoy the road and if you have any questions don’t hesitate to call or come by Westpointe Chrysler, Jeep, Dodge, and Ram Service Center for more information.
